At least 50 policemen were hospitalized after prisoners at the Welikada prison attacked them during a search operation at the prison early this morning, informed sources said.

About 4000 prisoners were removed from their cells for a surprise drug raid. The raid  was conducted by 500 police and prison officers who were later attacked by the prisoners. Action has been taken to bring the unrest under control, prisons sources said.

46 police officers and 2 prison officers have been admitted to the National Hospital and are currently being treated for various injures sustained due to the attacks by prison inmates. Injuries to the head, chest and abdomen are reported and medical investigations are being carried out to determine whether there are any serious internal injures. Dr. Hector Weerasinghe Director of National Hospital told Daily Mirror online

Dr. Weerasinghe added that no fatalities were reported yet and that the outlook for the injured officers was positive. (G.S & S.D)

I totally agree with Deen who made valuable remarks on this story. Since I have been working in the Middle Eastern Countries, I know how the technology works for the people. most of the Mosques have fixed up the gadget (as mentioned by Deen) to halt the mobile transmission within the complex. so why not we follow this system.? also fix up many CCTV cameras and even Minister can see from his office what is taking place at the Prison complexes.

I wonder why these 4000 prisorers taken out wihtout handcuff. this is not the welfare club or any sports compound that Police had been going to search. they must come prepared all these strategies. I believe this is purely a lack of know-how theory to face a tough situation. at least in future, consult someone who has little tactic knowledge without just going into a deadly situation like this.

    nala3 Sunday, 07 November 2010 04:07 PM

This is because the cops did not plan for what they were expected to do. If they can't handle the prisoners in the prison, how can they handle wrong doers outside? Shame on Police Dept!

Why is there no word about the prisoners or what exactly happened to provoke the riot? The State is responsible for the safety of these prisoners.

    meranchi Sunday, 07 November 2010 09:08 AM

according to the deputy minister statement police must raid prison with responsibility then he admit prison guard cannot control drug trafficking in the prison that's mean they allowed to do so, no action was taken. when police raid the notorious place must raid with fully arm guard if not you get beating like happen now

Whom else other than the government to blame for this. What is your logic.

    Tintin Sunday, 07 November 2010 09:54 AM

The prison is run by the state (the government). If there is a problem inside the prison whom else do you blame.

    Sicillian Monday, 08 November 2010 12:42 AM

"Every dog has its day". Police and prison official beat the prisoners and today was their day.

    Tintin Sunday, 07 November 2010 09:58 AM

This is an international conspiracy to discredit our great leader MR. The standard story we will soon hear from our patriots.

    Ranjan Sunday, 07 November 2010 10:15 AM

    Viraj Monday, 08 November 2010 01:21 AM

Finally government have backbone for against drug trafficer and underworld. thank you.

    Ranjan Sunday, 07 November 2010 11:45 AM

Responsible officers? Are there any responsible officers left in Sri Lanka? and what cannot be done with money ? It can turn the responsible to totally irresponsible.

    Deepal Sunday, 07 November 2010 12:07 PM

So, Mahinda's (Balasuriya ;-)) guys got assaulted. Funny. These cops cannot tackle the law outside prisons properly get assaulted in Prison.

Ruwan Ferdinandez Sunday, 07 November 2010 12:41 PM

This is nothing to do with SF. The drug trade in Welikada is a massive problem. Some prison officers, police and many prisoners were involved in the past. This is an attempt to curb the menace.

    TP Sunday, 07 November 2010 12:54 PM

If there is suspicion of drugs in Prisons check and investigate the Prison officials. How can there be drugs without their connivance.

    meranchi Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:05 AM

no one hospitalize from attack side only police officers are only hospitalize....?

    Ranjan Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:07 AM

I'm a strong supporter of the general for what he did to our motherland. But I don't blame the government over this incident. Everyone knows how some certain prisoners enjoy some luxury life inside prisons. They handle all the mafia inside the prison. It is very brave step by the IGP. Also I don't mind if the police officers used jungle law and take of these underworld gangs inside prisons.

Abdul Razeen Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:09 AM

What in the world are you talking about? 50 policemen beaten up by prisoners has somehow become the government's fault? Let's blame the rain on the government next

    J Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:14 AM

    SF is safe???????

    michi Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:23 AM

Pls do not say this is a conspiracy made by SF

Nina Kamal Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:26 AM

Lets wait for the drama to unfold.... for the cat to come out, a huge hidden agenda!!!!!

    hemj Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:29 AM

Some guys are always against the Govt making comments, try to relate anything and everything. It has been in the news for days and weeks about the country wide drug raids. Now there is a threat that school children at the age of 12 have access to those, as happened in many Asian countries. It is high time to eliminate this problem in the country.
    Why blame Govt.? or Police?
Who else will do that for the sake of youth and children????

    DEEN Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:31 AM

IN OUR JAILS, ALMOST EVERYTHING IS AVAILABLE, BUT AT A PRICE. EXCEPT A PROSTITUTE, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE. MOBILE PHONES, SIM CARDS, PHONE CHARGERS, PHONE CARDS, WEAPONS, DRUGS ETC ARE FREELY AVAILABLE. WHO IS HELPING THESE CRIMINALS IS A KNOWN STORY. IT IS NON OTHER THAN THE JAILERS WORKING THERE. FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, OUR PRISONS ARE CORRUPTED.
SOME SIMPLE TIPS TO GET RID OF THESE PROBLEMS:-
    1) INSTALL GADGETS THAT WOULD CUT OFF THE SIGNALS FOR MOBILE PHONES.
    2) INSTALL CCTV CAMERAS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, SO THAT IT COULD BE MONITORED BY RESPONSIBLE OFFICERS.

The Judge Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:34 AM

The prisoners are lockedup. It is only the prison guards be checked for drugs, before checking the prisoners

    alpiya Sunday, 07 November 2010 02:15 PM

Lets face it.. the police are corrupt and the most hated group in Sri lanka. If they can assault innocent people to death why wont the common prisoners want to assault them

    jarule Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:40 AM

Hurray hurray Prisoners must be angry about SFs Tratment thats why

Local Guy Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:45 AM

Bad planning by the authority, must adopt a better method to check criminals. Criminals hate Police anyway.

    Lakmal Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:46 AM

WE SALUTE FOR PRISONERS. WELL DONE !!!! PLS LOOK AFTER SF FROM POLICE.

NADARAJAH SETHURUPAN Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:49 AM

SF's war victory only 50 injured.

    Dingimahattaya Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:56 AM

Thanks God, they did not complete the search, if they completed, they should found Drugs & weponse SF's cell.
    Dingi- KSA

    Dingimahattaya Sunday, 07 November 2010 06:57 AM
