China, SL pledge to boost military ties

Senior Chinese and Sri Lankan defense officials agreed on Tuesday to promote military cooperation between the two countries.

Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, is currently on an official visit to the island nation.

Sri Lankan Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said the two countries have enjoyed good bilateral ties over the years with friendly cooperation in politics, economy and culture.

Sri Lanka would like to work with China to enhance military exchanges and cooperation, he said.

Wang said that China and Sri Lanka are good friends and good partners, and that their military ties have seen steady growth in recent years.

China is willing to work with Sri Lanka in deepening the practical cooperation between the two armed forces so as to further boost the strategic partnership of the two countries, he added.(Xinhua)

Hi sonali - The intention was to convey that SL must not get into a nasty situation of getting in-between demon and the deep sea. There is no denying the fact Chinese super economy is based on manufacturing and Indians based on IT services. The Global purchase power of these 2 countries are rated next to each other. In India most of the money is spent of the people, democracy, right to information, press freedom even though political system is not that strong, whereas in China they spend more on military and suppress freedom of expression in their own countrymen. China is a big bully remember, their culture and that of south Asians are totally different.SL though free to decide whom to trust...Remember Chinese military presence in future of any sort, will make things worse for SL and India. SL must not get swallowed or divided between the struggle for supremacy between India and China. Indian abstained from CHOGM due to sentiments and domestic compulsions.

It is good to get what ever support from friends. China is a proven friend to Sri Lanka. There is no even slightest stain on Sri Lanka -China friendship fabric in the history.

What pile of nonsense. India spent over $45 billion on defence in Y12. Thats 2.5% of GDP. PRC spent 2% - 2.5% (Official value is even less). Your comment sounds like a GoI Propaganda talk. As far as SL is concerned, India is THE MAIN bully constantly meddling in SL affairs including ruining the last chance for peace in SL. India just couldn't stand SL allying with the US. So India did everything to sabotage it. All hell broke loose because of India.

NIro...SL must not get played into the hands of China and India, otherwise SL will be declared the battle ground where both China and India - backed by Japan & US who are wary of China will test their muscle power. SL must be a neutral nation, they must gain from both the powers through non-alignment. Proximity of SL is close to India separated by few nautical miles. SL is a seasoned country which will not allow foreign military to take control of its rich resources and territory.

USA? OMG please no. Dont you see Middle East countries, once USA there, there's no way for them to leave, it will consume part of your country bit by bit, and believe me SL is a rich country. Atleast with the rising of China and India, US have another counterpart.. and US has its own problem for now. India is not poor and China is not rich but they are rising as the new powers of the world especially in technology. And I think China helps SL a lot because of their similarities in religion; and communist and socialist are proven as good friends, those are good reasons to start bilateral relation.

Beware of the Communist Nation, its intentions are totally undemocratic. Draw the line correctly, or else SL will one day be controlled by China. China is known to be arrogant, assertive and plunders other countries resources....see what is happening to all smaller nations around china sea. By granting more loans to SL, they will one day take control of the natural resources and sea lanes under their control, as SL would find it hard to levy heavy taxes on its citizens. Why not engage Russia/India/Australia to build the ports... Why not borrow from world bank instead of China. Think....

we are spending lot of money for military training courses. Most of the time these courses are conducted by india and pakistan. presently forces offer courses conducted by china.
