Yes, I too think that public speakers, religious leaders, psychologists and other child protection authorities should get together and develop a strategy to establish moral codes in the present corrupt society.
The duty of Police is only to arrest culprits and to produce them in courts. Though police arrest culprits, the root of the problem is still unattended at. That is the need for parents and adults to take proactive measures to keep an eye over their children, and not blame the govnt for their own lapses. Parent should be more vigilant about their children and never allow them to go anywhere alone, especially at night. That is their duty in the 1st place.
Minister Friday, 06 July 2012 04:13 AM
That is because the culprits are protected by so many bigwigs. Please don't complain to us. It is your duty to curb this menace.
Cobra Friday, 06 July 2012 05:01 AM
The authorities only keep harping on this but do not take steps to put in place severe deterrents. If they look the other way and allow the mob to take action on just one rapist this will stop!
eshan Friday, 06 July 2012 05:11 AM
Please amend the regulation immediately and re-introduce the death penalty.
Rajiv Friday, 06 July 2012 05:23 AM
Dear Yoha,
Note that facebook and port sites are not the cause of such frustrations. Infact pornography is something which would decrease the level of frustration of people in this country, as well as an open sex culture. Most of these crazy things happens because our culture finds sex a taboo. In western cultures sex among couples is a norm, thus people are not frustrated. Sri Lankan youth are extremely desperate and frustrated because of this restrictive culture.
Nodrog Friday, 06 July 2012 05:27 AM
So right manpei...pity our leaders and clergy cannot understand this.
JasonGroom Friday, 06 July 2012 05:38 AM
This is a disease in the society. Every country has their own fare share of these crimes. so its not only common to us.
in order to curb this parents needs to be more actively looking into their children safety. Schools and teachers be more involved in the awareness process.
Media should expose the culprits with details (hats off the swranawahini of late of exposing some of the these culprits)
No point cutting the branches, kill the roots...........
manpei Friday, 06 July 2012 06:13 AM
Pity our people don't understand this... Sex as long as it's between 2 consulting adults is not a dirty or a bad thing. Why don't we teach our children these things. Instead of hiding it from them.
Sapumal Bandara Friday, 06 July 2012 06:36 AM
For God's sake stop this blame game. We have had enough of it. Lets us all get together and demand the legislature to impose the death penalty on proven child abusers and hang them.
No human rights group has a moral right to object to this as 100% rape cases are proved scientifically through DNA tests..
klk Friday, 06 July 2012 03:52 AM
Ban all Mega Teledramas.
Alles Friday, 06 July 2012 07:28 AM
Very true. It's easy to blame the internet and the government and western countries and what not. But we are all responsible for teaching our young whats right and wrong and for teaching them about sex too the right and wrong way to do it. These monsters are also after all someone's children. why are we so ashamed to talk to our children about these things. Better they learn from us.
Ken Friday, 06 July 2012 07:44 AM
what is happening to Sri Lanka..... ?
I don't think there is any other country who preaches bana/dhamma like SL, any other country who goes to church or mosque like SL...... put on the TV/Radio.... from morning to evening how many programs are there just talking about, proper attitudes, good behaviours etc etc.... I mean not only by priests, but by everyone.....
In other countries people don't preach... they're not as religious as us... but they RESPECT each other..... RESPECT each other's rights.... including children.....
They have learnt it from their elder generations, and their children are learning it from them.
I feel very very sorry for SL...
Indeewara Thursday, 05 July 2012 03:08 PM
what is their recommendation ,,,,,,,,,,,,Ban Face book....
Nodrog Thursday, 05 July 2012 10:42 AM
Yes, I think everyone already knows that. Question is, what are you going to do about it?
Criclover Thursday, 05 July 2012 10:57 AM
Whatever the politics, we should protect children...
Dinithi Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:07 AM
This number is only the reported. I think in the past these things happened too but now people report them more because of the powerful media. Even children see media reports of child rape and they now know that they are not the only ones affected and it is OK to tell it to somebody rather than keeping it to themselves.
oshanda Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:13 AM
This has nothing to do with facebook, this is due to lawlessness in the country and morals and ethics gone down in sociaty. Law should be equal to every one.
Kiris Baba Amaray Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:16 AM
Sir, what is the next action by your Department? Hope the present IGP can trap the culprits and stop this nonesones.
weha Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:22 AM
Banning Porn sites is clearly one of the reasons for this.
senavi Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:29 AM

Sim Thursday, 05 July 2012 11:31 AM

Yohan Perera Thursday, 05 July 2012 03:32 PM
May I remind you that Facebook and most of the porn web sites are miracles of US and Europe??? Please use common sense before leaving your comments.
Ni Thursday, 05 July 2012 04:02 PM
The main cause of this is oppression of sex in the country. Banning Pornographic materials further will only serve to increase this. Let people watch it and release the tension. Only those who don't release have the need to do violent acts. I might stand alone here, but there is a dire need for the legalisation and regulation of pornography in the country, not otherwise. The rates of sex crimes will drop dramatically.
ibnuaboo Thursday, 05 July 2012 04:43 PM
punishment for child sexual abuse is not extreme .this is the reason to increase this offence.immediately pass new law to punish the culprits with hanging or life sentance in jail. take arab countries for example .there are no this type of crimes due to the severe punishment like headcutting
welusumana Thursday, 05 July 2012 09:31 PM
STRANGE.They want to impose death penalty only to drug traffickers. Children are the heart of the nation. That is not that important to them. All this convicted child rapists should be hung in public.
samosa Friday, 06 July 2012 02:16 AM
Thats why he said, only Police cant prevent these crimes, even parents, elders and adults are responsible in preventing such incidents. If they behave like animals what Police can do except punish them or rehabilitate them.
wimala Friday, 06 July 2012 03:19 AM
Sexual opression and no proper sex education is the root cause. Banning social media and porn to stop child abuse is noncense. Typical Srilankan mentality to blame everything on what's new and foreign. Most hild abuse cases are infact from rural areas where people have no access to these things.
manpei Friday, 06 July 2012 03:28 AM
Remember human's are sexual beings and sex is a basic need. Making a farce of upholiding values and oppressing these needs will only lead to more of these crimes. The majority of child abuse cases in srilanka are in rural areas where children are molested by their own fathrs and family members, not because they've been on FB or porn sights but because sex in their homes with their partners is taboo, to show they have urges is shamefull. so they rape and molest when they think no one sees. imagine how many cases go unreported. Srilankans need to change their attitudes before they go around blaming everything else.
