The Union government on Thursday moved the Supreme Court against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's move to free the killers of Rajiv Gandhi.

The apex court has agreed to hear the Centre's plea later in the day.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has issued a statement slamming the move of Tamil Nadu government to free Rajiv Gandhi's killers.

TN govt's proposed course of action to release the killers of Shri Rajiv Gandhi is not legally tenable and should not be proceeded with, Manmohan Singh said in the statement, adding, the assassination of Shri Rajiv Gandhi was an attack on the soul of India.

Release of the killers of a former PM of India, our great leader, and other innocent Indians, would be contrary to all principles of justice. No government or party should be soft in our fight against terrorism, the Prime Minister said.
The Tamil Nadu government had on Wednesday announced to release all the seven killers in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

It had given the Centre three days time to respond, failing which it said, it would go ahead and let all the seven convicts walk free.

The move by the state government came a day after the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of three of the killers to life term.

A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam on Tuesday commuted the death sentences of Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan, on the ground of a delay of nearly 11 years in deciding their mercy petitions by successive Presidents of India.

On Wednesday, Jayalalithaa said the state cabinet had decided to release the convicts as per the powers vested with the state under Section 432 CrPC.

It had decided to remit the sentences of Suthendraraja alias Santhan, V Sriharan alias Murugan and A G Perarivalan alias Arivu, considering the long incarceration of more than 23 years.

It has also decided to release immediately the other four convicts, Nalini, Robert Pyas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran, who served life-term for more than 23 years, she had said.

The Centre had reacted strongly to the state government's decision.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had expressed sadness over the state government's decision.

"If a Prime Minister's killers can be released, what kind of justice should the common man expect?" Rahul said reacting to the news. (Times of India)

If Karina and kp are under state patronage without serving a single day in prison why can't just they be released after 23,yrz. I us the Rahul feelings. It's reasonable. But compared to what happened in SL it's nothing. via DM Android App

Ramesh, your argument is quite logical. Karuna who is a minister of MR govt is responsible for the merciless killing of at least 600 unarmed policemen. The present generation doesnt know the history. Thank you Ramesh.

Jagath Leanage Thursday, 20 February 2014 11:52 PM

Why does she ask to release? Does she do that to all convicted criminals who did murders and to persons who has given death penalty? Its a big problem for us. Actually does she approve Rajeev Gandhi's killing?

Now India must be feeling how uncomfortable to cohabit with TN govt rather Jayalilitha. India will get second feeling when US turns other side in Indian issues.

Who are killers of Rajiv Gandhi? I think some are sill outside. They should be sent to jail first. Indian politics is a joke.

    dushnatha Thursday, 20 February 2014 06:22 PM

Why do we have to be bothered about what India does with Rajeevi Gandhi killing. Its not our problem. They will look after it mind you that's Sonia Gandhi husband. They will take care of it. and we Sri lankans fight for who is right. Karuna was a terrorist, but he renounced violence and took the democracy path. there are other terrorist leaders who took the ballot than the bullet. End of the day... this is a Indias problem and just have to be watching and enjoy the circus.

upul perera Thursday, 20 February 2014 01:41 PM

Votes are far more important than justice. That is why they love terrorists in India and in Srilanka.,not for anything else..

    Ramesh Thursday, 20 February 2014 02:55 PM

Hey Madhura, some of the killers have been handed over... so you all did the needful by appointing them Ministers, Chief Ministers and Advisers to the Presidents... why don't you take action against them first, before opening your dirty mouth for other things.....

Cyril Matthew Thursday, 20 February 2014 02:59 PM

Ah you will murder them instead? or will you do the same as you did to Vijitha Rohana - the failed assassin?
