The body of the Sri Lankan Captain killed by Somali pirates on Sunday is to be handed over to the Sri Lankan authorities in the United Arab Emirates in order to be transported to Sri Lanka. The ship carrying the body is nearing the Sharjah Port, sources said. Sunil Dharmaratne was killed in waters off the UAE, when Somali pirates boarded the “Ocean Trite” and opened fire.

Sri Lankan Authorities in Sharjah along with the UAE authorities will conduct the autopsy, after which the body will be transported to Sri Lanka.
The “Ocean Trite”, a commercial ship registered in the UAE, was traveling between the waters of UAE and Iran.

A resident of Boralasgamuwa 54-year-old Dharmaratne had been working in Sharjah for four years.

Wow you sound just like "those warmongering Americans". This is what happens when you are either unable or unwilling to understand of the nature of problems, nor distinguish between oppressor and oppressed. The majority of Somalis have suffered much at the hands of those despicable warlords and then the Islamists. Piracy cannot flourish like it does, if there was a government. The Straits of Malacca have been plagued by pirates for years, but they cant dock hijacked ships by the dozen at Indonesian ports without catching the attention of the Navy. So if you want to resolve this problem, help do what it takes to establish a functioning government in a land free from terrorism. Good luck with that!

If I read right, the location the pirates boarded the vessel is beyond my comprehension - The Straits of Hormuz is the entrance to the Persian Gulf and has more traffic than on the Galle Road at 8 AM on a weekday - and it is also some 4 - 5 days sailing time from Somalia or the Gulf of Aden where piracy is at its peak... So far the Northern-most point of Hijacking has been off the coast of Oman in the narrow strip of water between the coast and the island of Masira (mv Charelle - 2009 June). The present location is around 27 Degrees North and roughly 1100 n,m. from the Gulf of Aden...and it beats me how a bum-boat with pirates got that far - attacked the vessel - killed the Captain and just vanished into the thin air! This area also has excellent mobile phone signals of Etisalat, OmanTel, AirTel as well as a few other operators... This simply can not be true... even the more sophisticated navies of the world operate off logistic bases off Oman...

Mere talking and suppositions are a waste of time. over 200 ships were hijacked. As GKA points out, our navy has hans-on experience against the most formidable. A frigate or two to blow the Somali pirates would send a clear message to the pirates, not to mention the other Nations who can learn a thing or two.

Spot on Taj... Our SBS or RABS commandos from the Navy should be placed on board ships carrying SL crews. These elites, who have hands-on fighting experience are better than any other in world, and have the capability to wipe out these Somali gangs.

I suppose, there are lot of Sri Lankans working on these ships, and now we have completed the war with most ruthless terror outift, it is not a bad idea to send some of our esteem navy seals and special forces heroes and I am sure for them these somalians no match, even the west navys are patrolling they are not upto our standards.
