New legislation designed to discourage human smuggling would allow Canadian authorities to detain passengers and crew aboard migrant ships for up to one year, CTV News has learned.

The new measure would buy Canadian immigration officials time to confirm the identity of migrants and human smugglers.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and Public Safety Minister Vic Toews are set to unveil the new legislation on Thursday in Vancouver.

Under its terms, asylum seekers whose claims are deemed to be bogus would remain behind bars until they are deported from Canada. Captains and the crews of migrant ships would also face heavy fines and mandatory minimum jail sentences, CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife reported.

Canada wants 1 year to confirm the identity of migrants and human smugglers. If this time was fixed by our own country, Sri Lanka, there would be a lot of opposition just to get political advantage/leverage by many interested parties.

Is Canada NOT a signatory of the 1951 UN charter for refugees? What happened to their open door policy? TIRED EH?

canada should implement tough laws for these asylum seekers , must send them back to their lands , who ever requst for asylum is only for their financial benefit , canada must deport them to make them to realize of the law of the land.

Another load of hogwash instead of just sending them back. No reason for refugee status from anyone in Sri Lanka now. This may be OK for those from countries at war just now.

    Sharma Thursday, 21 October 2010 05:50 AM

Just because there is no Law and Order in Sri Lanka, we cannot expect other countries to have rule when such countries are trulely democratic.

Canada you opened the political asylum flood gates, now you are submerging. Still not too late.

    Nandimithra Thursday, 21 October 2010 08:14 AM

What about those who already hoodwinked you saying refugees but reavel to SL & go back to Canada ? What action on them ?? They can come here permanently.

    srinath Thursday, 21 October 2010 09:38 AM

Please do not, Please take all the EElamists to Canada. Poor soles looking for better life. Canada have mercy, Ayyyoooo

matara kolla Thursday, 21 October 2010 11:19 AM

How rediculous. They get asylym/refugee status and qualify for handouts. Then become regular visitors to SL where they claimed discrimination and atrocities ! I was on a flight to Colombo last year and nearly 60% of the passengers were from Canada en route visitng relatives, their businesses in SL.
