Bus fares up from next month

The National Transport Commission (NTC) is planning to increase bus fares by 6.2% from July 1, but the minimum fare of Rs. 9 is likely to remain unchanged.During a discussion held yesterday between the NTC and representatives of the Inter Regional Bus Companies presided over by NTC Chairman Roshan Gunawardene, some bus owners lamented that the percentage of increase was not sufficient and sought a bigger hike.
The NTC Chairman said the report on yesterday’s discussion would be handed over to Private Transport Services Minister C.B. Ratnayake, while adding that bus owners had proposed a change in the criteria adopted in the bus fare revision structure.
He said another meeting would be held with the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association and the All Ceylon Private Bus Companies Federation soon. (Mahinda Nissanka - Courtesy Lankadeepa)

I agree with the price hike, but bring Luxury. Don't allow packed people in to buses. Limit the passengers in a Bus. impose heavy fines if the buses overloaded. Make 10% fare hike reasonable.

Please increase Rs. 9 to Rs. 10 and reduce Rs.16 to Rs. 15. This will reduce the shortage of coins and disputes between passengers and bus conductors.

Increasing fares may be reasonable. But where is the quality improvement? National Transport Commission is not doing anything effective in this regard since of late. A large percentage of bus commuters are moving away from public transport and resorting to some sort of private transport resulting congestion in main cities !!

Do we really need a government in the country to put up prices to run the country? Government should doo things to ease the burdens of the masses. The question is are these happening. Not at all. As long as this prevail nothing good for the pople wii come by.

Minimum fare is anyway 10/-. Who can take 9/- in change all the time. How many bus conductors give the 1/- change. They put their coins in to their back pocket and say no change.
