Bridge collapses on Rakwana- Deniyaya Road

The traffic on the Rakwana- Deniyaya Road came to a standstill this morning after the Kalupalama bridge at Hedaraliwatta collapsed while a lorry transporting a load of fertilizer was passing the bridge, police said.

They said no injuries were reported. Motorists are requested to use the Kolonna Road from the Udagama Junction in Embilipitiya as an alternative.

From the photos it appears to be a bridge built by the British!

The reason it collapsed is because the steel must have rusted and there is no money to be made with bridge maintenance!!

This was built in English era as far as I know & probably not maintained well there after..a ten well vehicle is any way not suitable for a road like this..fortunately something worse than this did not happen.. via DM Android App
