A five year old boy who was flying a kite in an abandoned paddy field at Kotatlawalapura in Nawagamuwa on Wednesday evening fell into a pit and drowned.

His parents who went searching the boy when he failed to return at dusk noticed one of his slippers at the edge of the pit.

When the pit was emptied with the help of the residents in the area the body was found at the bottom of the pit.

Meanwhile, police media spokesman Buddhika Siriwardene warned parents to be watchful of their children who engage in flying kites in abandoned land and by the sea shore or engage in other outdoor activities during the school vacation. (Muditha Dayananda)
