Australian police said Thursday that early reports suggested up to 75 asylum seekers had died after their boat capsized off remote Christmas Island en route from Sri Lanka.

Western Australia police commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said a "large number" of the 200 on board were feared to have perished.

"Some of the very early reports suggest that up to 75 people may have drowned, but I do stress that they are unconfirmed at this stage," O'Callaghan told reporters.

"There were about 200 refugees on board we think. Currently there's about 40 on the hull and the rest are in the water," he added.

O'Callaghan said police were "very concerned for a large number of people who may have drowned" as a result of the capsize, which occurred in Indonesian waters 120 nautical miles north of Australia's Christmas Island.

"We know from what we've been hearing from the aircraft that there's not 200 life jackets on board," he added.

O'Callaghan said it looked as though the operation "will have to go well into the night". (Source: AFP)

The West has apparently failed their effort to propagate their version of "freedom and democracy" in the third world.

So now they should atleast allow the poor souls trying to escape to the lands of freedom and democracy, instead of killing them at sea.

luckly no sri lankans in this boat... But, can you also advice the people not to leave the country even with high skill, family settle, higher studies? then why are they going legally? we all talk about illegal immigration... for me i don't see any difference between legal & illegal when it comes to immigration.. all are economic refugees...

    Malith Friday, 22 June 2012 04:54 AM

"asylum seekers" ," Refugees", what ever you call them, these are people who paid over Rs, 700,000 to sail to Christmas Island. These are not people who are trying to avoid third world life but trying to gain 1st world comforts. Every one of them had paid big amounts of money not by selling their properties or borrowing money. These are people with money who takes these boat trips to see if they can make a better life in Australia or in any other country. After they receive their landing status from Australia, they do their best to get the Australian passport. After they receive the Australian passport, they fly to Italy. They know in Western Countries and Europe its hard to find jobs. These operators are making big money by smuggling humans.
