Only five chicken breeders are in operation in the country and the brokers buy the chicks from the hatcheries and sell them for exaggerated prices, the recommended price for sale is Rs.172, Dr. D.D. Wanasinghe said.
He added that although the government had decided to import chicks to control the price and meet the consumer demands the ministerial approval was still pending.
