One month old chicken chicks are being sold in the black market for Rs.290 to chicken farmers after brokers purchase them between Rs.180-190 from hatcheries, Head of the Poultry Producers Association, Dr. D.D. Wanasinghe told Daily Mirror online

Only five chicken breeders are in operation in the country and the brokers buy the chicks from the hatcheries and sell them for exaggerated prices, the recommended price for sale is Rs.172, Dr. D.D. Wanasinghe said.

He added that although the government had decided to import chicks to control the price and meet the consumer demands the ministerial approval was still pending. And that immediate action from the government was necessary to import the necessary chicks to meet consumer demands. (Daily Mirror online)
