The Bengal tiger cub that was born a week ago at the Dehiwela zoo died an hour ago, the National Zoological Gardens said

National Zoological Gardens Unit Director, Bashwara Gunaratne said that a post-mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

Veterinary surgeon, Dr. Jagath Jayasekara said that the cause of death is likely due to the fact that the cub did not receive natural milk from the mother. “The anti-bodies named chlostrum which cannot be produced artificially, are necessary for a new born. If they do not receive it this type of situation is likely. Right now we assume that this is the cause,” he said. (Olindhi Jaysundere)

Its not an easy task to rear abandoned cubs of any species. In foreign zoos this is done by a single individual who plays 'mother' to an abandoned cub 24/7. Its a labor of love, some even sleep with the cubs to offer it security and comfort. Also they have to be fed a formula that closely resembles the natural milk of the(mother) species . Our zoo officials should have got in touch with a foreign zoo (in india) that has the experience in rearing abandoned tige cubs. With todays internt facilities it would have been no problem to get advise from experienced
    vets.

    Basil will be furious!

    Kaputa Friday, 29 October 2010 11:21 AM

Hey, you better understand the different between a tiger and a human. Breast pumping ok for human, are you going to hold the tiger untill they pump the milk. Be practical,

    Lalindra Friday, 29 October 2010 11:30 AM

    How?

    nishanthi Friday, 29 October 2010 11:49 AM

    poor cub. how sad.

    Ravy Friday, 29 October 2010 11:54 AM

SL is not a place for tigers not even in the zoos. Tamil diaspora will be up in arms blaming it on a possible conspiracy by the Rajapakses, never mind that poor Basil is heartbroken.

    srinath.gunaratne Friday, 29 October 2010 11:56 AM

Devo wassathu kalena Raja Bawathu Dhammiko.

    commonsense Friday, 29 October 2010 11:57 AM

its sad to note that the poor animal is also being tied to the terrorist organisation just like how many innocent tamils are.. its high time such cruel jokes and comments are ridden from a civil society!

    shane Friday, 29 October 2010 12:11 PM

please start an inquiry with 3 special police groups as srilankan style.

    MagodisThuma Friday, 29 October 2010 12:51 PM

Yes Malkanthi Tigress could do it better & save the cub !

    sampath Friday, 29 October 2010 01:55 PM

    Hey;
Hey Couldn't we drugged the mother tiger and fed the cub with mother's milk. Just a thought!!!

    Geronimo Friday, 29 October 2010 11:01 AM

Not the Zoo Director- the tiger mother for rejecting the baby in the first place.

    san Friday, 29 October 2010 02:09 PM

Immysl & Shanth… I agree with you guys.. Malk always think negative side.
So sad about cub loss and things can happen like this. I don’t think zoo officials fed wrong in this case.

    Anuradha Friday, 29 October 2010 02:14 PM

Sham country, I suspect this gonna happen. Same thing happened to Anacondas born few months back, all died. Lack of skills. This country is politically corrupted. No other explanation needed. People have no heads, no one want to change the system.

    DHA Friday, 29 October 2010 03:16 PM

very true.....this case sounds more like the mother is very stressed.....!!!

    DMorg Friday, 29 October 2010 04:50 PM

Had the cub lived it could have been named KP (koti Patiya). But again, that would have been an insult to the caged cub with one KP already in the loose.

Citzen Silvas Friday, 29 October 2010 11:53 PM

Why the mum rejected her? cos she couldn't afford to breast feed her- as she herself was under nourished due to high cost of living-

When human Mums throw the child into river for the same reason

    Victor Saturday, 30 October 2010 02:25 AM

Incompetent zoo vets!!! There won't be many animals left in the zoo in a few years. Zoos around the world have changed to different model. We still keep the animals in cages.

    gotapakaya Saturday, 30 October 2010 03:25 AM

    Karuna , Pillayan or K.P?

    ruwan Saturday, 30 October 2010 08:07 AM

To tarnish sri lanka image ... planed by the opposition :-) or unqualified people on service ... like any other sector from top to bottom ...

    hrrmph Saturday, 30 October 2010 03:44 PM

It might just be that the mother didnt want to feed the cub.. which isn't uncommon in the animal kingdom. why jump to conclusions?

pini bindu Saturday, 30 October 2010 07:37 PM

i totaly agree with yo faqi,

    immysl Friday, 29 October 2010 10:15 AM

I wonder why people have thumbs down you. They don't get the sarcasm of your message I guess. So next time put sarcasm in the brackets. ;)

Oyage sudu kella Friday, 29 October 2010 09:55 AM

Aiyo .... hari pavu aney. Naughty ma.

    spark Friday, 29 October 2010 09:56 AM

    Oh how sad.

    lankaman Friday, 29 October 2010 09:57 AM

we should tie zoo director to a tree

    Niro Friday, 29 October 2010 09:57 AM

    so sad!

    mathan Friday, 29 October 2010 10:02 AM

ane mage sweeeeeeeet petto.... so sad....

Shantha Perera Friday, 29 October 2010 10:05 AM

in other word we are not that professonal

    iluminatis Friday, 29 October 2010 10:06 AM

May be SF is involved !

    sltk2004 Friday, 29 October 2010 10:06 AM

They should've used a breast pump and extracted the mothe's milk, and then fed that milk to the cub.

    Dheen Friday, 29 October 2010 10:06 AM

It looks like the time is not good for the tigers, both two and four legged. Personal care and more attention need to be given to those in the Zoo before something happens to them.

    Mahinda Friday, 29 October 2010 10:14 AM

Zoo official should have given more attention and care. Start an inquiry using experts other than zoo vets to know the people how it died

    malkanthi Friday, 29 October 2010 09:53 AM

So the cub was wrongly fed the the zoo officials. File a similar case like 'Rizana'!

    shanthapriya Friday, 29 October 2010 10:15 AM

MAL , YOU COULD HAVE COME FORWARD TO FEED HIM THE CORRECT WAY.
WE ARE SO SORRY FOR THE LIFE OF POOR CUB

jim jam Friday, 29 October 2010 10:17 AM

Zoo has gone to the dogs!
If they know what the cause is, why couldnt they sedate the mother and get milk? They need very little of it for the cub to build immunity.

    Nilantha Friday, 29 October 2010 10:27 AM

    very true

roshan raz Friday, 29 October 2010 10:30 AM

poor tiger cub... i feel very very sad.

Above the crowd Mr. Friday, 29 October 2010 10:31 AM

Its an absolute and a total disaster to the country. What are we going to do? Holy mackerel!!

    neville Friday, 29 October 2010 10:31 AM

People have no right to keep animals in cages.Give their freedom immediately

    ENW.

    jaki Friday, 29 October 2010 10:34 AM

leave those animals back to the jungle...............tiger cub didn't die she was killed............ back again leave those animals back to jungle...............

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 29 October 2010 10:37 AM

They could have easily used some "Tiger experts" adept at bringing up tiger cubs and who are on government payroll now, such as Karuna, Pillayan, The Masters and even KP!

    Mendis E L S Friday, 29 October 2010 10:56 AM

Why didn't they pump the milk out of the Mom tiger and feed the cub. It's not that difficult. Even human Moms do that in different circumstances.

    Rasa Friday, 29 October 2010 10:57 AM

so sad to here.. they should be kept in incubators like for little sucklings.... we must have R&D capabilities at our zoos. so we know how to handel these rare animals.

    pitty :((
