Army Commander Daya Ratnayake has appointed a Board of Inquiry headed by Adjutant General of the Sri Lanka Army Major General Jagath Dias to inquire into the allegations levelled against the army during the  Weliweriya incident on Thursday.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said the five-member board would investigate into all allegations against the military including the alleged assault on civilians and journalists and the killing of a youth.

“The Army will also be subject to a police inquiry and an internal probe” he said.

Earlier the Colombo Crimes Division was assigned to investigate the violence which led to the death of a 17-year-old student.

Villagers alleged that the Army assaulted them and opened fire while they were protesting.

Commenting on the Army presence in the area which was visible till last evening, Brigadier Wanigasuriya said that the Army was gradually moving out of the area.

“The numbers have been reduced and the army will move out once the situation returns to normal,” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)

some of you are SOOO quick to blame the Army, who sacrificed their lives, limbs, eyes, for 35 years...!!! They are the ones to come to save you, and they SHOULD be the ones to be balmed for handling the situations, isn't it? This is why Prabhakaran said "Sinhalese have NO gratitude, and they forget EVERYTHING just in 2 weeks.." Sinhalese are the ones who betray their beautiful country to dirty, filthy Tamils..!!

Just like setting a thief to catch a thief. This must be one of the worst jokes played on the innocent people whose only cry was for safe drinking water. Most probably, the army men were bored without any action and used this opportunity to flex their muscles.
