Animal sacrifice put off on President’s request

30 August 2012 07:17 am - 37     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Munneswaram Sri Maha Badrakali Amman Devasthanam Administrator Kalimuththu Sivapatha Sundaram said today that the animal sacrifice which was to be held tomorrow had been stopped on a request made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The President had made this request because the ritual coincided with the exposition of the Sacred Kapilawasttu Buddha relics.

However Mr. Sundaram said it would take place after the exposition of the sacred relics is because there were no other reasons to stop it.

“The President has only told us to refrain from carrying out the sacrifice while the exposition of the relic is going on. But we will have it after the exposition,” he said.

Mr. Sundaram said he had not received a written request from the President and would appreciate if such a written request was sent to him.

Meanwhile referring to Minister Mervyn Silva’s statement that he would go to Munneswaram tomorrow and stop the sacrifice, the Devasthanam Administrator said the no one will stop the minister from comming to the temple.

He said he did not want to react to remarks made by the minister. (Yohan Perera and Augastin Fernando)

Jaffna had a lot of this some years back but I think its either not there now or is on a very reduced scale.

Hey MR NODROG, Y dont u insist the other party on exhibiting some old relics and use time that time to think about the nation!! Learn to respect each religion and the beliefs.

Cruelty of creatures is against Hinduism.

    Sam Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:41 AM

MR should have also ordered the stoppage of slaughter of thousands of cattle, goats etc.,millions of chickens, and millions of fish - the fishermen should have been ordered not to go fishing too.
This request/order only to the kovil is sheer hypocrisy.
Monks order meat dishes for "dane".
    This too is "religious" hypocrisy.

Kapilawastu Silva Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:44 AM

Animal sacrifice in not good. But, how come the dirty minded political people kill animals for their daily food is no problem?
There are lots of things to be cleaned in our soul and in our house before follow the real Buddhism or Hinduism.
    Anyone in SriLanka?

The need of the hour is put a stop on selling alcohol and thereby save the innocent people. We hear rape and murder stories everyday in our TVs so MR and company including Mervin Silva should step up to put a stop on alcohol not killing of animals. Buddhism, Hinduism & Islam do not allow their followers to drink alcohol or liquor.

    Jay Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:03 PM

I dont see a reson to stop this, that is a tradition of Hindues, they kill animals one day only, and still sell all of that. We kill every day.

    Mifly Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:15 PM

Relics are not harming anyone. Slaughtering animals on the other hand is causing loss of life. Ritual slaughter of hundreds of animals like that is brutal and barbaric.

    Raabu Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:25 PM

Big deal. why can't he ban this primitive practice, Postponing it last minute like this won't do any good to animals already being brought, and they will be killed inhumanly any way and be eaten, this is a show off to our stupid people, not a solution to this cruel practice, people get up for our rights as Citizens in this country.

I fully agree with Mr. Nodrog, you are absolutely correct.

    Raabu Thursday, 30 August 2012 12:30 PM

Yes, if President is honest in his intention...otherwise this is a joke,or attempt to to get cheap publicity,.. What's happening to those animals? are they going to go to safe places?

    Be A Vegetarian Friday, 31 August 2012 04:37 AM

Its always the dumb animals who suffer to provide people with sport, entertainment, labour, food and now a Goddesses blessing! If you love your Goddess so much why not sacrifice yourself? That should take u to heaven in no time!

    Nodrog Thursday, 30 August 2012 07:43 AM

hey Sundaram, instead of killing innocent animals why don't you feed some poor people or build some houses or some other form of charity?

    Nodrog Friday, 31 August 2012 05:11 AM

ravim, don't embarrass yourself, try to make some sense when you comment so we can respond accordingly.

    RamUK Thursday, 30 August 2012 07:38 AM

Good move by the admin. But do MR has to intervene in this. One man show but plz set stock market right otherwise we (foreign investors) wont invest there

    poorgoat Thursday, 30 August 2012 08:03 AM

Just becasue we did animal sacrifices 100 years ago or so, we should not carry those out now as well.
A society is measured by how it treats its weakest members; (animals or humans)

Keera is Weaker Friday, 31 August 2012 06:49 AM

Plants are weaker. Stop killing plants! Eat only cow dung.

Keera is Weaker Friday, 31 August 2012 06:51 AM

They will be killed the next day. Silly fools think they can hoodwink the public all the time.

Keera is Weaker Friday, 31 August 2012 06:52 AM

Then why did the mainly Hindu LTTE kill so many innocent people? I have lost loved ones due to their actions.

Keera Lover Friday, 31 August 2012 06:54 AM

Religion is only for show in the blessed land. Gullible public falls for these cheap gimmicks unfortunately.

Keera Lover Friday, 31 August 2012 06:59 AM

Please do not kill defenseless and weak species like plants for food. It extremely pathetic that people like you prefer one life form over another. What have plants done to deserve this?

    Modaya Friday, 31 August 2012 07:18 AM

Why are you questioning Sundaram's religious belief? It is his right. If you are the saint you are claiming to be, go feed others and build houses without ordering others.

What is wrong in killing animals for food? Remember that fish, plants etc are all living things.

    DD Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:16 AM

I don't like the slaughter of animals at all but equal rights to all religions comes first.

    seenimalli Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:11 PM

instead of animals please sacrifice corupted minister thug.

    Nero Thursday, 30 August 2012 04:11 PM

Can we also put off human killing at the request of the President.

    ZScore Friday, 31 August 2012 07:45 AM

Why all of a sudden? Agree that the rituals performed could be considered barbaric, but they have the right to practice there region. And how about taking some action on your own government members who murder each other and rape innocent children. What BS.

    InvictuSriLankan Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:09 AM

Well Said my friend!!! There is NO God who wants innocent animals killed in their is the Human Gods who are thirsty for Blood!!!

    Jawfer Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:27 AM

Will stop any religious custom by called minister for any reasons? and he only intervene in others religion where our constitution allowed to practice.

    Lebbe Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:52 AM

Time of Ramazan festival at Macca thousands of sheeps killed.
    How can you justify that.
Faith and ritualsn of devotees should not be deterred and has to be give due respect to all religions.

    ravi Thursday, 30 August 2012 09:57 AM

hay Nodog why only sundaram has to do it why others cant do it becouse others preched to kill people.

    MR Thursday, 30 August 2012 06:26 PM

I know some backward top politicians who are Sinhala Buddhists who did this nonesense of sacrificing animals too.

    CHANDRAPALA Friday, 31 August 2012 10:14 AM

The topic is killing animals for consumption and killing animals for religious custom. Both activities are wrong according to Buddhism. Why is Dr. Mervin who is a true Buddhist going only one direction? What would happen if Administrator of Kovil sell the meat after their religious custom?

Dollar Boy Thursday, 30 August 2012 10:16 PM

political jokers should think of getting the country going ,rather than thinking of small petty issues.

    Dinesh Thursday, 30 August 2012 10:43 AM

What about the animals that are slaughtered and sold for meat and profit. Shouldn't that too be stopped during exposition of the Sacred Kapilawasttu Buddha relics.

    Nodrog Friday, 31 August 2012 10:35 AM

Modaya by name and Modaya by nature. Don't be absurd, no one questioning beliefs or claiming sainthood. And, not saying its wrong to kill just do it in a more humane and civilized manner.
