A New York-based human rights group is calling on the prime minister to retract some comments he made during a recent visit to Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Human Rights Watch Australia say Tony Abbott's comments appeared to be condoning the use of toture during the years of Sri Lanka's civil war.

The group's Australia Director Elaine Pearson told Andi Yu, Mr Abbott needs to clarify Australia's stance on torture. (SBS)

so people asking clean water also terrorist ?

    Santhosh Thursday, 28 November 2013 09:40 AM

Michael, what do you expect from a terrorist organisation? the only thing they know is violence, you cannot expect a democratic country to behave like terrorists.

@Unicorn, I can see your less knowledge about australia.

disgusting, what about the torture in Iraq, Afghan, Libya and so on committed by the so called west HRW are you afraid to talk about them??

    Deepan Thursday, 28 November 2013 10:11 AM

Because MR doesn't do the right thing after the war. Still many more things are happening and whole world watching. Our country is going to face the consequence of it. We are getting into a deep hole.

    Malin Thursday, 28 November 2013 06:16 AM

There is no torture proved unlike US's guantanabay torture. So why should Tony Abbott respond to HRW? Let. HRW talk of US torture in their own home ground.

    Michael Thursday, 28 November 2013 06:19 AM

I wonder if HRW also condemns the kidnapping and tortures and summary killings done by the LTTE .. or that is a closed chapter for them ..

    S.Bernard Thursday, 28 November 2013 11:02 AM

Without terrorists, no anti terror activities .
When no anti-terror actions no action for HRW.

Hence HRW needs terror groups for their bread and butter.

Nalin De Alwis Thursday, 28 November 2013 11:04 AM

Why Sri Lanka is the target? It is because pro Tamil Tiger Terrorist groups are lobbying hard in those countries. Even donating funds for HRW.

    unchikun Thursday, 28 November 2013 11:18 AM

Can we expect anything better from defenders of POW.

Sonali De Silva Thursday, 28 November 2013 06:44 AM

Why Sri Lanka is the target of so many organizations and counties is beyond comprehension. Is it because we destroyed terrorism in its worst form and they can't stomach it, or what? Or is it that they can't sell arms anymore to the terrorist? There is bound to be collateral damage in a war that lasted 28 years.

    Unicorn Thursday, 28 November 2013 12:29 PM

Looks like Abbott will be Aborted either by Indonesia or US .
