President Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday he would fulfil the task of eliminating terrorism from the country even if it meant putting his life at stake.

He made this comment while addressing May Day celebrations organised by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Trade Union Federation at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo.

He also emphasized that as a nation all must unite under a one flag with a firm determination and courage to establish peace in the country, while eliminating terrorism with the heartbreaking memories faced by all on that date.

President Sirisena said that the safety of every Sri Lankan has already been established. In addition, he said that our security forces have implemented island wide security measures. Foreign expertise was also used for these programs.

The President further stated that steps are being taken to prevent this type of tragedy and to take appropriate action in future.

The President also said that all working citizens in this country, members of trade unions and all other people in the country should unite with the task of building a peaceful country and consolidating the national security.

Among the attendees were senior MPs Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Mahinda Amaraweera and Duminda Dissanayake. Also present at the event were left-wing party leaders Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawardena, Prof. Tissa Vitharana and Leslie Devendra.

Very true Dave! We all remember what he said . " you were the very person who said you will resign if ranil was re elected as pm. Most probably the IGP's who advised against, field marshal SF being appointed as the Minister of Law and Order, advised him that Rani will not win the case. (Not supporting Ranil either" Now he is saying People have not demanded my resignation - President May 2, 2019 08:47 am . As I remember Field Marshal, SF proposing, the Prez need to pass a certain mental test. Perhaps a bill must be passed to safe guard the citizens of Mother Lanka. These are the leaders we have, and will do anything t remain in power. It is the faithful who attended Easter Sunday, along with you and I had to suffer. The worst wounds are for the living family members, relatives and friends who lost their dear and loved ones. Not a single MP / Minsiter resigned! Nor their families were harmed. parliamentarians ensured that.
