A 39-year-old man was killed and ten others including two women injured when a wild elephant attacked a van near the Meeoya Bridge on the Puttalam-Anuradhapura Road early this morning, Police said.
They said the injured were admitted to the Puttalam Hospital.
The deceased, Velayudhan Dharmaraj, is a resident of Jaffna.

Its possible the people in the van may have done something to provoke the elephant.

These incidents are happening more and more for both foreigners and nationals. Hope the authorities take some action. Wild elephants entering areas people live/ main roads needs to be addressed.

This attack is very unusual, either the elephant has been shot by a farmer in the dawn or the people in the vehicle messed up with the animal. However this is the period that elephants go mad due to lack of water and mating season is just approaching, people need to be watchful.
