Sri Lanka batsman Danushka Gunathilaka was given out in the most unusual fashion during the 1st ODI vs West Indies today after Kieron Pollard appealed for his wicket after his foot — seemingly unintentionally — pushed the ball away from the bowler.
During the 22nd over of the Sri Lanka innings, Gunathilaka, who had just reached his half-century, took a couple of steps out to take a single but then decided against it. When he moved to get back to his crease, he deflected the ball away from Pollard’s reach with the underside of his foot.
Pollard immediately appealed. The third umpire was called, with the soft signal being out. Replays did nothing but to show the moment in slow motion and the decision was upheld.
As the batsman walked back with a look of disbelief on his face, Sri Lanka coach Micky Arthur was seen furiously walking out of the dressing room and walking to the match referee’s room.
Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody was among those who thought the obstruction by the batsman was anything but willful. Even former West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy said he would not have appealed for the wicket.
Danushka Gunathilaka is the first Sri Lankan to be dismissed Obstructing the field (Law 37).

@ Jude, you always bash the Western countries. So why are you a big fan of a typical British ( colonial Commonwealth) game? Huh? Yeah?

Yes. Pathum Nissanka too is a Wicket Keeper / Batsman. Will that sum up? As for Danushka, he was retreating to the crease backwards. The ball was between is feet he did not know where the ball was. It was clear he was unsighted. Up to U those who watched the game.

Our team selection is totally wrong. The right players are not given chances due to Political interference.

Waste of talking about Sri Lankan Cricket, we have the currupted Cricketing Board. Must learn from other countries all of them are great cricketers.

Though Dhanushka Gunatileka was unlucky to have lost his wicket the way he did, I believe Kieron Pollard would have merely appealed on the spur of the moment, without meaning to be un-sporty. The referee could have disallowed the appeal as the incident was accidental. Whatever it was, the consolation would be, both Dhanushka and Kieron have been immortalized within the annals of cricket. Cricket lovely cricket, lets digest this and move on
