The world-renowned automobile manufacturer Volkswagen AG is all set to start work on the much-awaited vehicle assembly plant at Kulliyapitiya with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe laying the foundation stone at 3.00 p.m.
The US$26.5 million BOI project will assemble 1000cc to 2000cc Volkswagen vehicles including passenger cars, sport utility vehicles and multi utility vehicles to be marketed locally for three years and thereafter with the investor venturing into the export market. (Yohan Perera)

Good Initiative. But think about it: VW invested US$ 780m in India for a plant, why would they want to invest US$ 26.5m in Sri Lanka to reach an export market in 3 years.....?????

Cause its not VW assembly plant.. its western assembly plant. Nothing to do with VW so far hopefully in the future. Currently this has nothing to do with VW

An investment of US $26.5m is for a very small assembly plant. A decent size car plant will require an investment of more than US $500m. I would expect a plant of this scale to only assemble about 10 cars a day. This plant is not owned by VW, instead owned by the local VW importer. This is just political gimmick to save this government’s tattered reputation, this plant will not even create 100 jobs.
