Reports stated the building was situated behind the Savoy Cinema.

Nine individuals were admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and four others were admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo.

Similar type of unauthorised building being constructed along canal edge at dharmarama road in wellawatte by buddhist monk.

ranjith chandrasekera Saturday, 20 May 2017 03:06 PM

The question remains who gave approval to comment addition to the building,. Is it the colombo building department of the CMC or UDB. Whoever they are they are solely responsible for this tragedy.

    Rupan Friday, 19 May 2017 04:51 PM

Who will stopped all unauthorized construction like this in Colombo? Is it possible with current corrupted system ?

    Katie Friday, 19 May 2017 09:46 AM

Agree with Shana - government should stop the high rising building in this small country. Everything is concrete. No more tar even on by-roads. Digging for apartments has caused havoc specially in Wellawatte. Colombo is now a Concrete World.

    Feranando Friday, 19 May 2017 08:14 AM

This seem to be a structural failure due to poor designwithout considering the soil condition of the channel bank. Now Every Civil Engineer with a degree is a structural Engineer. This practice to be stopped.Do they have a soil investigation report to this project.?

Cheap poor quality products used by constructors... via DM Android App

    Sanjeewa Thursday, 18 May 2017 09:23 PM

Gota cleaned Colombo and it was sparkling. Yahapalanaya - ruined Colombo making it littered with ugly apartments, filthy roads and garbage. Apartments all over the place without any sort of planning. Disgusting.

    Oh..god..oh..god...oh...ahad

    bombili Thursday, 18 May 2017 09:02 PM

Wllawata ? must be Thamil Nadu cowboy builders

    Namal Thursday, 18 May 2017 08:18 PM

Was this building built by the Chinese??

    Maniya Thursday, 18 May 2017 07:10 PM

Such incidents are normal when a country is corrupt top down(((

    Mo Thursday, 18 May 2017 11:53 AM

This is good example that Engineering education should have good quality. If doctor make a mistake die one person, however engineer's miskake would result several death. Therefore, GMOA argument is based less.

    concern Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:45 PM

Exactly. You bribe the correct person you could build anything and any where. This also causes floods.

    Sheri Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:44 PM

Colombo and its suburbs, especially Colpetty, Bambalapitiya, Wellawatte, Dehiwela, Mt Lavinia, Ratmalana, Moratuwa, etc, are being transformed into a concrete jungle by very greedy, selfish developers who build shoddy apartments. The once-beautiful gardens and green trees which provided canopies of shade, and created ecosystems and habitat for birds and insects, absorbing harmful gasses, have been destroyed. A beautiful tree of 20, 30, 50 years can be brought down by a stroke of a chain-saw. Those who do not care for the environment are filling their pockets and bank balances. Some scrupulous developers/builders come from other parts of the country to make their money and are moving into other parts of the capital too. Just how much can a small island like ours, take??

    SHANA Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:22 PM

GOVT SHOULD STOP GIVING APPROVAL TO BUILD APARTMENTS THAT ARE SPRINGING UP EVERYWHERE. THERE IS NO PROPER MANAGEMENT IN THE COUNTRY.

    channa Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:22 PM

buildings constructed in 18th and 19th centuries are still solid. where is the problem?

    mithra Thursday, 18 May 2017 06:09 PM

Very good example. But this logic does not go in to the brains of so called GMOA doctors because they are brain washed to follow a political agenda designed by MR/JO.

    Andy Thursday, 18 May 2017 05:52 PM

Garbage. This is due to lack of permit compliance; or building inspection procedure.

    Emm Thursday, 18 May 2017 05:31 PM

Mmm.. were the extra floor going up authorized or unauthorized ? Looks something supplementary...

Joe Muththu Thursday, 18 May 2017 05:27 PM

Could this be the use of sea-sand in construction?

    Damithw Thursday, 18 May 2017 04:29 PM

All the Private Engineering Faculties should be Nationalized !!!!! AND Stop Chinese build any more
