Expressing disappointment over the incident where a senior diplomat of the US Embassy leaving the airport without a PCR test, former MP Namal Rajapaksa said what was needed now was cooperation and respect more than ever.
“Reports regarding a US diplomat refusing PCR tests at BIA are so disappointing. Vienna Convention or not, the world’s in the midst of a global pandemic and what we need more than ever is cooperation and respect of one another’s national frameworks which are put in place to save lives,” he tweeted.
Officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), after consulting the relevant ministries, have allowed the diplomat to leave the airport without a PCR test yesterday morning.
US Embassy said that the arrival of US diplomatic staff to Sri Lanka complies with the norms and procedures outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, just as it applies to arrival of Sri Lankan and other diplomatic staff to the United States.

This is the biggest crisis the world is facing since the Second World War, protection from virulent infection is therefore overrides any diplomatic convention. The Security personnel at the Air Port should have been given the orders to prevent this arrogant American guy from leaving the Air Port.

You did not talk when the supporters breaching social distancing rules carry the coffin of Arumugam Thondaman. Why? This is because Thondaman's son was a member of Pohottuwa.

These so called diplomats have no morals. They think their diplomatic immunity could be used any time any where. The officials should have returned him on the very same flight to where ever he came from.

its not about him catching it.. the worry is that he could bring the virus into the country..
sri lanka has much lower number compared to the usa.. so there is a high risk of him bringing it into sri lanka

I shudder to think this happening to one of our( Sri Lankan ) diplomat arriving at a US airport . They will apply maximum possible harassment.
I put the blame on our airport security people . They should have insisted on the test , if not accepted , send him back. Possibly our security were having the " whites can make no mistake, they are supreme". Moment.
I like to see an Indian or Pkistani one in a similar situation.
Always remember SRI LANKA IS A SOVEREIGN STATE , WE MAKE OUR LAWS , IF THE FOREIGNERS DO NOT LIKE IT , THERE ARE ALWAYS RETURN FLIGHTS.
