UNP is to take action against those members who had handover nominations to contest the general elections from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
“Those members who have been engaged in a controversy by deciding to contest under another party had not followed section 3(c) of the party constitution. All those who want opted to contest from another party needs to obtain the approval of the working committee under this section if they are to contest from another party,” Mr. Kariyawasam said in a statement.
“The Party Leadership has decided to take action against those who want to contest from another party under section 3(h) of the party constitution,” he added.
However he said some members have already regretted their decision to contest from another party.
Mr. Kariyawasam said the party had decided to call for explanation from those who had opted to contest from another party.
Around 70 former UNP MPs have given in nominations to contest under the Samagi Jana Balawegaya led by former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. (Yohan Perera)
