The UK Government renewed its call on Sri Lanka, a country which has consistently backed UN resolutions for worldwide suspension of executions, to abolish the death penalty.

UK Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field, said the UK Government calls on all countries, including Sri Lanka, to abolish the death penalty.

“The Sri Lankan Government is well aware of the UK and EU position on the death penalty and we hope the moratorium will be sustained,” he said in UK Parliament when MP Jim Cunningham asked what discussions the UK has had with Sri Lanka on the latter’s decision to end moratorium on death penalty.

State Minister Field said Sri Lanka had been a consistent supporter of UN General Assembly resolutions calling for a worldwide suspension of executions since the first such resolution was proposed in 2007.

“Earlier, the British High Commission in Colombo joined the EU delegation in lobbying the Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Ministry to maintain this position in the December 2018 UN vote, supporting a moratorium on the use of the death penalty. In January 2019, after further reporting of the intention to restart the death penalty, our High Commission raised the issue with senior officials in the Sri Lankan Government,” he said. Will the U.K also demand the USA to abolish death penalty ? Americans execute people and even allow others to come and watch the execution. But U.K. would not have the courage to criticise the America

Good. Grant all SL convicts on death row 'asylem status' in UK. Hmm may be citing 'death row' as reason cause there is no civil war, abduction , HR 'violations' etc. Now in Sri Lanka. HR activists, you are correct even a guy convicted of large scale drug dealing has the 'right to live' and continue the business from jail. Take em to UK, for sure business will thrive over there!

    Please Friday, 15 February 2019 08:24 AM

We want to hang DRUG DEALERS.

Uk should at least realise that they no longer lord it over us, you were kicked out unceremoniously for interfering and devastating nations. Look at the state of law and order in your own front yard, rampant blood bath and mayhem due to your namby-pamby laws. Mind your own business!

Death penalty is never going to stop any problem. Even though people are executed throughout the human history this capital punishment had not stop people committing such crimes. But some of the executed are worshipped today as gods, saints, idols and national heroes.

UK mind your own business as we are not colony of yours anymore. We need to hang the first drug dealer ASAP to stop all these nonsense statements

It doesn't matter who ask to stop death penalty. Death penalty is outdated way of handling crimes and must STOP. A fool like Sirisena may not know the background of why it is not doing anymore or its psychological impact.. He just uttering like a village Gamarala. How can a human beings who can think, analyses things according to available data can kill someone ? No human being has the right to kill anyone. Its barbaric and must condemn as act of terror or insult to the society. Even Budhdha didn't prach something like that. He said nahi werena werani etc.he preach about loving kindness. But those fake monks and unkind Sirisena has no Maitriya or compassion. Only he has the name. Someone like Sirisena calibre has no brain capacity to manage Drug problem. Not only that he is incompetent and repeatedly showing his inability.

Lord Wolfstein Friday, 15 February 2019 02:28 PM

Those who are supporting the death penalty are mentally sick. It's exactly the same people who take the law into their own hands. The country can do better without these people.
