A 68-year-old woman and her 49-year-old daughter-in-law have been arrested at the Anuradhapura Prison when they attempted to smuggle in heroin to the prison, concealing them inside a loaf of bread, the police said.
They said the two arrested had hidden 6.2 grams of heroin inside the bread with the intention of giving it to the 68-year old woman’s son, who is an inmate at the prison.
The police said the inmate was in remand custody on charges of heroin possession.
The women, residents of Anuradhapura, were arrested following a tip-off.
Meanwhile, another two women were arrested during two separate raids in Grand Pass and Angulana on charges of heroin possession.
A 35-year-old woman, who is a resident of Colombo 14, was arrested with 4.2 grams of heroin by the Colombo Crimes Division, while a 26-year-old woman, who is a resident of Piliyandala, was arrested for possessing 3 grams of heroin by the Angulana Police.(DS)
