Cricketer Thisara Perera has joined the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force as a Major, following an invitation of Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Chandana Wickramasingha said today that Thisara Perera has accepted the invitation and he would enlist in the Gajaba Regiment.

Ministry of Defence has also approved Perera’s appointment. Thisara Perera had played his first match for the Army Cricket on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Thisara Perera tweeted that, “I accepted the invitation of Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva in the first place and joined the Army. Getting an invitation from someone like him was one of the biggest achievements of my life. Thank you, Sir! I look forward to contributing my best to Army Cricket.”

Earlier, Cricketer Dinesh Chandimal also joined the Sri Lanka Army as a Major to play for Army Cricket. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

How relaxed and informal we Sri Lankans are, the Army Chief is holding his hand around the sportsman. In the West this would be unthinkable, they would say overt emotion is not part of professionalism , yet hilariously , they would bow down and bend their knees almost touching the ground when they see their queen.

Like Navy rugby when Yoshitha was around, now it is going to be a circus with the army. Our cricketers are sell outs too, anything for money. Damn corrupt country in every way

What qualifications do they have to join the Army? BTW in the event of a war, they need to goto the battle front. Do they know that?

What a joke. Now the qualification to become an army major is to be a cricketer.

OMG - this Army Commander looks rather like a bloated bellboy than what he really is.
