Tense situation at Mahara Prison: One killed, three injured

One inmate died while another three sustained injuries during the tense situation erupted within the Mahara Prison this evening, Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

He said the prison officers had to use force to control unrest within the Prison resulting in one death and injuries.

"Four police teams have been deployed to bring the situation under control while special teams of the Special Task Force were also deployed to beef up security outside the prison," the Spokesman said.

The injured inmates have been admitted to hospital for treatment.

He said a probe would be conducted over the incident.

It was reported that the tense situation has erupted when a group of inmates attempted to escape from the prison. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
