Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday said he will soon make a statement in parliament on the withdrawal of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s security after discussing the matter with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The speaker said so when joint opposition Parliament group leader Dinesh Gunawardene raised the matter in the House last morning.
“The former President has said there are threats to his life and therefore removing his security is a dangerous move. I have already had discussions on the matter with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake on the issue," Mr Gunawardene said.
Speaker Jayasuriya who responded said he would inform Parliament on the matter after discussing with the President and the Prime Minister.
MP Dullas Alaheperuma said theeformer president had a greater threat than TNA MP M A Sumanthiran who has also received death threats.
Chief opposition whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake said increasing or withdrawing an MPs security was not a healthy trend. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

If people are with him and if LTTE is defeated, what are the threats that he has? Giving security is not an issue but it got to be properly evaluated.

why Karu making a big fuss without saying MR actually doesnt need body guards coz THERE IS NO WAR by his own admittance.. can we also pls withdraw EVERY guard provided to Gota ..since hes just an ordinary citizen. . how did MR withdraw the guards away from Chandrika...who almost got killed and lost vision due to a bomb attack. Speaker has no rights to interfere in the security details of an ex-President. The rights of the speaker is to get involved in issues relating to a MP. Since Mahinda Rajapakse is an MP he has to be provided with the same security offered to all other MPs. if Mahinda wants to claim that his security has to be increased then he has to look at himself. He is the one who changed how security is provided to ex-Presidents. He reduced the security for Chandrika. How can he, PM or even the present President change this arrangement put in motion by Mahinda at this time..

He should be given special protection for gunning down the worlds popular tiger terrorist outfit after 30 years of murderess stint which took many innocent civilians such as school children,woman, men killed like animals on our streets and in public transport. Ranil, Mathree, Chandrika for that matter does not need any high protection as they are not a threat and was never a threat as they are spineless and scared and will hide under tables and it was in the past they had all protections but the public paid a huge price with JR,Premadasa, Chandrika and Ranil. Please note tamil diaspora and tamils with different mind set wants to see the end of Mahinda for finishing Prabha and the Clan. So he should be protected unlike any leader including Gotabaya.
