A building at New Chetty Street in Kotahena caught fire when a sky cracker fell last night, the Police said.
The Police said the sky cracker had fallen into a gunny bag, which had covered the building.
The Colombo Fire Brigade had doused the fire with the assistance of the Police and residents. No injuries were reported due to the fire, the Police said. The damage due to the fire was yet to be estimated.

This is due the lack of standards in Sri Lanka. Even the normal fire crackers are dangerous and too noisy. These should be banned and standards followed up with conformance testing need to be introduced.

Agree. While some are accidents, there are intentional incidents too. Some insane person in our neighborhood has enjoyed 'miserable joy' by throwing lit cracker into our letter boxes...!

It is high time the Government of Sri Lanka banned fire works. It is nothing but a menacing experience to both little infants and animals.
