Criticizing the government’s move to increase the salaries of MPs, the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) today said their salaries should be based on their performance similar to any other organisation.

PHU Leader and MP Udaya Gammanpila said the government should evaluate the progress it had made so far before increasing the salaries of the MPs.

“In any institution, the salaries of employees are usually based on their performance. The employees who work hard should receive salary increments and those who are slacking off should get their bonus reduced. The government should follow this method and do a self-evaluation,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Before making any proposal, one should define what 'performance' means and how it is measured (the 'metric') and by whom.a) Like getting their salary increase, is performance to be measured and evaluated by MPs themselves?b) What performance should one measure? Is it the amount of money accumulated through corruption? The time spent on working hard at them? How many thugs and criminals one has around? How much one shouts and how many times the Parliament was disrupted and brought into disrepute? How many trips abroad one took? How many duty free permits sold? How many lies told? etc etc?c) Don't our electoral system allow voters to judge the real and important performance at elections?d) No increase should be given in this parliament but perhaps give a bonus to those who get re-elected (not appointed again) next time because they have been judged by the electorate.
