Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday dis-associated itself from the government’s decision to increase water bills by 30 per cent.
Party’s Research and Technology Minister Susil Premajayantha told Daily Mirror this proposal had been introduced outside the budget.
“We have to discuss this matter. We were in the dark about it,” he said.
When asked about the SLFP proposals incorporated in the budget, the minister said some of them had been incorporated with modifications.
“We are agreeable to that,” he said and added that the proposal to provide electronic tablets free of charge to schoolchildren would not serve the intended purpose in the wake of the government deciding to increase internet-usage charges.
“Along with progressive proposals, there are some meaningless ones as well,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Come on Minister you and your party are part of this government and enjoy most of the good things in life provided at the tax payers 'expense. You are fully responsible for what is in the budget, both good and meaningless as you say and what is out side the budget. My gut feeling is within the next few months even the good things like most of duty reductions of food items will be reversed "to help farmers" This has happened every year. .

Biggest mistake the Governments did since independence was to give every thing free. Free education, students do not realize the value. They go on striking, vandalizing instead of studying. There must be a student loan scheme and they must payback after completion of studies and on employment. All western countries have this system and is successful. Even the Sri Lankan students studying abroad pay their fees.

Is not the SLFP part of this government? Where did Premajayath learn his politics on Cabinet Responsibilty? Did not eh Cabinet approve the provisions of the budget ? Is this the sort of politician we have in this country? Completely unprincipled and opportunist!

During difficult times tough decisions must be made to bring the country back on track. Disassociate yourself permanently from politics if you can't understand that.
