Refuting the claims made by several Tamil politicians that Sri Lankan security forces used chemical weapons and cluster bombs during the war in the North, State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday said there is no evidence to back up these allegations.
Mr. Wijewardene told Parliament that such allegations are being made by a group of Tamil politicians including Former Chief Minister of the Northern Province C. V. Wigneswaran. "These politicians have embraced communalism,” Mr. Wijewardene said.
He said there is no need for an international probe to determine whether cluster bombs and chemical weapons were used as no such thing had taken place. “We are capable of conducting our own probe into allegations such as these, but there is no such need,” he said.
“It is the security forces which saved the lives of people living in the North during the recent bad weather that was experienced and provided them relief,” he added.
Mr. Wijewardene said the allegation made by some UPFA MPs that the government was dancing to the tune of the international community is also false. “We don’t work for the international community, we work for the betterment of the people of this country,” he said. No cluster bombs or CHE weapons in the past and sri lanka will never have it in the future. This is nothing but an attempt to confuse the PPL of N/S/E/W and the international community to divert and derail the existing investigations. Stick to the existing allegations and don't make things too convoluted.

Were there such weapons or not? "There is no evidence" is not a clear statement.

I am hail from jaffna and living in colombo for the last 30 years. I experienced some chemical bomb attack by pukkara air bomber. Also in Vanni, there are many evidences proffed by many of using chemical bomb and cluster bombs. There are many eyewitness living there. Ministers statement can be a political statement, but truth is not that.

Did you like do a lab test on the bombs or did the LTTE told you that these are chemical bombs?

It is very constructive the way our security forces work towards during humanitarian crisis such as flood. However war is not similar to flood. I was living in north durin war and experienced heavy bombardment. If there is a investigation conducted into what bombs was used during war it should be conducted in an non partial manner. I bet every one involved during war should definitely know such bombs. A honest investigation into this will heal the wounds of many people for sure

Recently read an article in DAWN. It analysed the Sinhala and Tamil mind sets in the context of pre/ post war scenario and concluded it is inevitable that the Tamils to take up to arms in the future unless otherwise they are taken into the mainstream. The divide and rule current approach will yield some short term benefit to politicians but very much detrimental to overall long term betterment of the country.
