‘Please give me another chance’ - Shramantha

In an open letter, Shramantha Jude Jayamaha, who was convicted over the Royal Park murder and released on a presidential pardon recently, requested society to give him another chance.

“I ask for your understanding, because that is the kind of country we live in - where there is hope for even the worst criminal and mercy and forgiveness is a way of life. Please give me another chance,” he said.

In a lengthy letter, Mr. Jayamaha elaborated on his story, his family background, the murder, conviction, prison life and the pardon.

He said he has no adequate words to express his grief towards what has come upon the Johnson family and said he was so ashamed for what has happened.

I believe forgiveness should come from the Johnson Family but there is no need for others to hang this young man. As mentioned there has been due process ( I hope ) and the fact that he has expressed remorse.

Dear Shramantha, I have no say on the final Judgement, nor do I have the capacity to judge. I believe you sought justice the right way. May God heal all the souls who were affected by the horrible incident. I think you deserve to be pardoned when compared to the crimes that are being committed and going unnoticed by our politicians. May God be with you and show you the right path.

Prison should first be a place of reform, and only second one of punishment. Our prison system is a long way from this, but hopefully, despite its failings, we have a case here where reform has worked. It is our responsibility as society to forgive, and help ex-prisoners rejoin society.

There is no point in commenting since no one can give life to a dead person neither could any person annul the pardon given by the President because sin will always follow you and to all those who have contributed.
