At least 27 parcels containing mobile phones, chargers, SIM cards, batteries and cigarettes etc, which had been thrown over the wall into the Welikada Female Section from the Colombo Remand Prison (CRP), were found by the prison officers, Prisons Commissioner and spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said.
He told Daily Mirror that the 27 parcels had been handed over to the Borella Police for further investigations.
“The operation was launched by a team of prison officers headed by the chief jailor of the Colombo Remand Prison,” Ekanayake said.
He said 15 mobile phones and eleven chargers were also recovered today from the Colombo Remand Prison.
Meanwhile, he said 15 inmates of Kalutara Prison who attempted to throw parcels containing phones and SIM cards were remanded today.
“We will continue to carry out such operations in future too in order to ensure that prisons are clean,” Ekanayake added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
