The United National Party (UNP) said yesterday it would carry out rigorous party reforms no sooner it defeated the no-confidence motion against UNP Leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament.

MP Kavinda Jayawardena told a news conference held at Sirikotha that they were confident of defeating the no-confidence motion on April 4 and launch its reforms on April 5.

“At the Working Committee meeting held on Thursday, the party decided to support the Premier and defeat the no-confidence motion. We also decided to reform the party. Three committees each headed by Ministers Sajith Premadasa, Ruwan Wijewardene and Deputy Minister J. C. Alawathuwala were appointed to submit proposals for party reforms. Two of the committees had handed over their reports to the party leader,” he said.

When asked whether there will be a change in the UNP leadership when the party undergoes reforms, Mr. Jayawardena said the specifics would be decided by the party at its convention.

Meanwhile, he said government members including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) ministers should resign from the government if they supported the motion which would be defeated.

The MP rejected reports of the UNP bribing MPs to vote against the no-confidence motion. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Dont try to force your opinion on people . People voted for you and the UNP is what it is today . The fact remains very clearly reading many comments is that is RW the Leader of the UNP is the WORST leader of any political party in Sri Lanka to-date .

Nothing will happen if no faith motion defeat. We have past experience on previous reforms. You might received something Dr. Jayawardhana

So you can fix the date for reforms after 20 years

Hey man, you are a stooge of your boss. You do not represent the sentiment of the grass root level UNP supports. The change in the leadership must come before the NCM as the NCM is directed at your lame duck leader.

Once again Ranil is missing the opportunity to prove the party does have a strategy to restructure and consolidate with solid succession planing. He has weakened the party and let down all those responsible for bringing the coalition into power. The recent reshuffle was an absolute disappointment and the Mr Clean image is gone. Sadly it is time for Ranil to step down for the sake of the party and Country. Had he been a corporate leader he would have been fired 10 times over for poor performance.

You should have waited one more day(april 1st) to annouce this.

What reforms? The only thing left is to send away failing Ranil and give leadership to that disaster Sajith. Either way I don't see country going forward with UNP anymore. Wrong people got hold of this party in 1977 and It never recovered after that.

UNP talks of reforms whenever there is a crisis against the leadership. How many times have UNPers left the party because of non democratic practices in the party. All UNP MPs must have the opportunity on decisions without limiting to a Committee full of RW faithfuls. NCM has become a prestige battle and attempts are to defeat it. After that everything will be forgotten again. CB Bond scam is the biggest black mark on party leader.

Who else vote against NCM,accept that bloody loot is right and no need to worry of it ,and get the coffers fill by taxing general reasonable as you do now , will be out of politics in next election

    will Saturday, 31 March 2018 04:32 PM

what is the connection with winning the NCM, and party reform,NCM is about what your leader had done with Ravi and few other confidants to make the way to loot central bank and his suspicious behavior there after to guard them, save them and at the end let Arjun mahendran to abscond the courts, that should be punished by law ,getting the party reorganize in not an national issue
