Over 130,000 people affected due to inclement weather; three dead

At least 133,280 people from 31,990 families in six districts had been affected by the prevailing extreme weather while three deaths have also be reported, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

The affected people are from six districts – Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Puttalam, Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara.

The DMC warned of floods with the water levels in several reservoirs and rivers were increasing rapidly while some were overflowing because of incessant rains.

The water levels of Kelani, Kalu Rivers, Maha Oya, Attanagalu Oya are rising.

Moreover, the National Building Research Organisation issued landslides warnings for Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Matara and Kegalle districts.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said prevailing showery condition in the South-western parts of the country is expected to continue further tonight.

“Showers or thundershowers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts,” it said.

“Very heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts,” the Department added. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
