Nine inmates who were killed during unrest at the Mahara Prison have tested positive for Covid-19, Ragama Hospital sources confirmed.
A total of 11 inmates were killed in the incident. At least 106 inmates and two prison officers were injured in the incident.
However, the majority of them have been discharged from the hospital and only 28 inmates and a prison officer are undergoing treatment at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and National Hospital in Colombo.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has initiated an investigation into the unrest at the Mahara Prison.
He said the CID team led by an SP comprises of 12 police officers.
