The Education Ministry has introduced a special dress code for expectant teachers from today based on a decision taken by Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam
“Pregnant teachers wore the traditional saree to school even during advanced stages of pregnancy and this will be very uncomfortable and not suitable in such situations,” the minister said.
Doctors had informed the minister about the need to provide a convenient dress code for pregnant teachers and this resulted in the minister directing the relevant authorities to introduce a comfortable dress code during pregnancy.
The inaugural programme countrywide will be held tomorrow under the patronage of the Education Minister.
The Education Ministry said there were 236,000 teachers in Sri Lanka with a majority of them being female and 10,000 teachers apply for maternity leave annually. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Education Minister must keep to his duties - If he is using his "talents" to design maternity wear - I suppose he will kneel to underwear as well (both in the top and bottom regions) .

"The inaugural programme countrywide will be held tomorrow under the patronage of the Education Minister." Our politicians try to get involved in everything. Pres and PM also should be there!

Is this a burning issue in the education field? How about providing toilets, drinking water, new buildings and stationery to the needy schools?
Ceylon Thursday, 24 May 2018 01:02 PM
Ask from saree wearing teachers, they tell you the owen they live during the day wearing saree.this is burning issue for them.
kondha Friday, 25 May 2018 12:57 PM
All governments have free time for these useless matters. Like MR made bus conductors wear a uniform when we had so many other problems
Chari Thursday, 24 May 2018 11:34 AM
Government must give them a decent dress. So much is spent on Parliamentarians....so why not.
Seelawathie Amarasinghe [Teacher] Thursday, 24 May 2018 12:26 PM
Yes the Education Minister will approve for Mini or Middy frocks to them.
Mrs. Leelawathie de Silva (primary teacher) Thursday, 24 May 2018 12:28 PM
Other than Saree, what is the decent dress Chari? Are you crazy like our education minister.
Manel Thursday, 24 May 2018 11:38 AM
Can the minister specify from which month of the pregnancy should they wear this and how much the wearer is paid by the ministry to get the 'maternity' dress stitched. Further how much will this dress contribute to the betterment of education in general.

This is good, But this is not the biggest problem we have in our education system. Minister still to not understand our problem, still sleep walking.

Some schools don't have proper toilet facilities yet. How about that Mr. Minister?
Lion M.P. Samarasinghe Thursday, 24 May 2018 12:24 PM
