Eighteen inmates who were involved in the Mahara Prison riot, have been sentenced to two months in prison today by the Prison Tribunal.
Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the accused were produced before the Prison Tribunal in accordance with Sections 271 to 276 of the Prisons Statutes for offences committed by inmates within a prison compound.
Among the offences committed by an inmate under Sections 78 and 81 (I) a, of the Prisons Ordinance were, rioting in prison, disobedience to prison officers, damage to property and harm fellow inmates.
The spokesman said charges were filed against the accused and the 18 convicts pleaded guilty and were sentenced to two months in prison.
Eleven inmates were killed and around 117 inmates had been severely injured during the prison riot which broke out between prison inmates and officials from November 29, 2020 to 30 at the Mahara Prison. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
