UNP Badulla District MP Chaminda Wijesiri surrendered to the Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court this morning over the alleged assault of a police constable attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB).
The police said the MP surrendered through a lawyer following the Bandarawela Police informing court and the Speaker on Monday.
The constable, travelling in a jeep belonging to the PNB-DIG, was allegedly assaulted by the MP and his security personnel after an argument that rose when the jeep overtook the MP’s vehicle at the Bandarawela town on Sunday.
The constable was admitted to the Bandarawela Hospital. The Bandarawela Police earlier said that they were looking to arrest the MP but he was evading.
The MP’s driver, who was also admitted to the Diyatalawa Hospital claiming he was assaulted by the constable, was remanded by the Bandarawela Magistrate over the incident. (Darshana Sanjeewa)
