The Kelaniya University was closed indefinitely from today with immediate effect following a clash with two students groups this morning, Head of the Department of Mass Communication Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told the Daily Mirror.
However, the Medical Faculty would continue to function as usual he said.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror he said the clash between two groups occurred last night and this morning.
The decision to close the University was arrived at a meeting held by the Senate following the clash.
“The clash could not be resolved despite several rounds of discussion held between the two rivaling student groups. Several students have been hospitalised,” Professor Piyadasa said.
“The campus has been declared out of bounds for all students except medical students,” he said.
He also said the science exhibition, which was now on to mark the 20th Anniversary of the University had been cancelled due to the closure of the university.
According to Police Media Division the clashes followed following some Arts Faculty students damaging the banners of the Medical exhibition.
They also said five students had been admitted to the Kiribathgoda Hospital last night. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Why not the Unis have thuggery clasess up to graduate level and give sataka as achievement like black belts. They can be exported to cause trouble in peaceful countries.

It is high time to have broad public discussion on Government Education ( NOT free education) WHAT is RIGHT to the country but not who is right. Leave politicians out of the picture. Get together with civil society and senior public officials. If not better to close them for ever and start with a fee to be paid in five years after graduation. Otherwise this is a waste to the country, sake of free education always keep universities closed.

SAITM should learn from government unis. Whats the point of funding for your own education and waste your time styding everyday. An ideal uni student should strike, fight, block roads causing public distress and cause damage to public property. Most importantly should fight to deprive others of their oppertunities sacrisifising what they get for free

'However, the Medical Faculty would continue to function as usual', I thought the medical students were anyway boycotting lectures for the last year. So, why keep the faculty open?

Close it indefinitely. Open a fee levying uni(at reasonable rates) and take our tax burden away. These useless free eds add no value to the nation. Can't even recruit them as casual hands
