Former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda has sent a Letter of Demand to Navy Commander Travis Sinniah demanding Rs.500 million over a statement allegedly made to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by the latter, the Daily Mirror learns.

The Letter of Demand sent by Attorney Wasantha Wijewardane on behalf of Admiral Karannagoda stated that, “I am instructed by my client that you have made numerous false and malicious allegations and statements against and/or in relation to my client. My client had also been made aware that you have made a false and malicious statement to the CID on or about mid-July against and/or in relation to my client. The statement specially being: ‘former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda was aware of the existence of a torture chamber/detention centre at the Gunsite at the Trincomalee Navy Base; and those who were detained at Gunsite number 1 and 2 had been murdered and the former Navy Commander and his staff were aware of this.”

The Letter of Demand that was sent on August 13, 2017 addressed to the then Rear Admiral Travis Sinniah, also stated that ‘…the aforesaid allegations/statements are extremely damaging to my client’s reputation and have been calculatedly made to bring disrepute to my client and thereby caused the delictual wrong of action injuriarum (defamation).

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral (Rtd) Udaya Keerthi Bandara also sent a Letter of Demand to Navy Commander Sinniah demanding Rs.500 million over a statement made to the CID over the same allegations.

This man who never took active participation in the war is not suitable for this post according to all senior and junior navy officers. He was given this post to satisfy the demands of Diaspora and int community

    suresh Friday, 25 August 2017 12:16 PM

participation in a war is not a prerequisite for the position of Navy Commander

    Mandy Friday, 25 August 2017 12:50 PM

Sinniah took active part in the Navy against terrorism.

    Liswom Friday, 25 August 2017 04:21 PM

You would have never made this racist comment if the appointee is from a majority community. Shame on you

    reader Friday, 25 August 2017 04:43 PM

Travis Sinniah was the most senior Navy person in active duty during the war - this is a fact!

    chris Friday, 25 August 2017 05:02 PM

Travis was active and was the most feared Navy officer by the LTTE. Karannagoda was at his desk signing letters.

Tom Cruse Jr Friday, 25 August 2017 08:29 PM

Talking of his hat, he was a lone brave sailor who destroyed LTTE ships

    Mahila Thursday, 31 August 2017 05:13 AM

Where were you when the person decamped and ran away to USA during the late 80's and came back claiming to salvage the country of what was left as head of defence admin

    Asoka Friday, 25 August 2017 10:19 AM

Probably Sinnaiya's statement is true...Karannagoda is such a person though he performed well to defeat LTTE

    malik Friday, 25 August 2017 11:05 AM

@Keerthi..You Clearly don't know your Military History, He was the man involved in arresting LTTE in the Palk Strait, Then mr Athulathmudali demanded they be sent to Colombo, thus starting the IPFK and LTTE war. One of Many incidents. Don't Preach without knowing. Diaspora Condemned him as a Traitor.

    Mevan Friday, 25 August 2017 11:13 AM

We all know about the deeds and misdeeds of MR regime which are being exposed now. Let legal investigations find out whether K'goda is innocent or guilty.

He seems to have accumulated a lot of wealth, his sons wedding at Hilton itself was in millions and paid so called by his "brother".

    Ravi Friday, 25 August 2017 12:06 PM

Name a person who did not earn by the war .

    Mahila Thursday, 31 August 2017 05:40 AM

Presumably, you were not around, or did not read history, when the self-proclaimed patriot and great redeemer the so-called architect of eradicating of terrorism, decamped and ran away at the height of the insurgency/terrorism in late eighties to USA felt and lived in comparative safe environment and returned claiming to salvage the country of what was left, as defence chief. Dream come true.

    Mahila Thursday, 31 August 2017 05:47 AM

He has no known Diaspora connection, as the Diaspora have publicly condemned him as traitor subsequent to Travis captured the 8 escaping LTTE's in Palk Bay in 1987 post Eelam 11 war and also in 2008 destroyed the Floating Armoury of the LTTE, 4 or 5 shiploads, which was the main factor enabling to easing the fight against LTTE, starving them of arms and ammunition. Check the 30 year war history, very enlightening.

    Mahila Thursday, 31 August 2017 05:56 AM

Frontline Military fighters are important war heroes as much as that those working behind the scenes, planning and oversee executing the plan. Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka was a frontline officer and also the Brains behind what was achieved in dismantling the LTTE war machine, No Doubt. There are many more like him in different arms of the defence services who performed behind the scenes and they to are no less patriotic than the officers in the war front.
