The fire at the Ambalanamulla garbage dump should be investigated to determine whether it was an act of sabotage as the location was close to the Kadolkale mangroves which was at the centre of a controversy recently, the United National Party (UNP) said yesterday.
UNP MP Ashu Marasinghe told a news conference that a proper investigation was necessary because those who wanted to build a playground on the mangrove could be behind the fire.
An attempt made by State Minister of Inland Fisheries Industry, Sanath Nishantha to secure the land to construct a playground was prevented by Forest Officer Devani Jayathilaka.
When asked about the reports that said UNP MP Gamini Wjith Wijyamuni Soyza was also interested in using the land, Prof. Marasinghe said these reports were false because MP Soyza only talked about safeguarding the Mangroves during the past few days.
He also called for an inquiry on the damage caused to the high tech boat which was gifted to Sri Lanka by Japan a few years ago. (Yohan Perera)
