The joint opposition today called for the arrest of Tourism Development, Christian Religious Affairs and Lands Minister John Amaratunga saying he was responsible for the removal of the walking path at Mabola in Wattala.

“Minister Amaratunga admitted to having ordered the removal of the walking path which was built at a cost of Rs.80 million. After I saw the news, I thought he will be arrested under the Public Properties Act or produced in the Negombo Magistrate’s Court. But nothing has happened so far,” joint opposition organiser MP Dullas Alahapperuma said.

He told a news conference in Colombo that this incident was one of the repercussions of the non-functioning of Local Government (LG) bodies. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

80 MILLION for a walking path? How come no one is investigating this blatant waste of public money?

    BuffaloaCitizen Tuesday, 29 March 2016 05:33 PM

Built at 80m public money and removed in arrogance.... this is the other side of persons behaving in the same manner as MaRa....arrogant, unaccountable and with full impunity of one's actions. What a sorrowful state we public are made to endure the acts committed against our precious money.

80 million for a walking path? Why didn't they build 80 houses for the poor. People can walk anywhere but can't live without a house.

    Upul Tuesday, 29 March 2016 05:44 PM

If he admitted that he ordered the removal of the walking path then, not only arresting him under the public properties act, he also should be ordered to rebuild that path using his own money.
