All unauthorized constructions along the coastal belt in Mirissa will be removed by May 1, Coastal Conservation Department Director Prabath Chandrakeerthi said yesterday.
He told a news briefing the task would be first launched at Mirissa and later implemented along the entire coastal belt.
He said 17 unauthorized constructions were identified along the Mirissa beach and their owners were already informed to remove them.
Mr. Chandrakkrthi said unauthorized constructions in Negombo and Dehiwala would also be removed next month.
Illegal constructions in Aman Beach in Tangalle and Uswetakeiyawa were removed by the Department of Coastal Conservation earlier this month. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

How about mount? Even 'spas' are there on the beach. And they have nicely put up picket fences encroaching the beach.

Why was this not done long ago? Has the Coast Conservation department woken up from deep slumber only now? And also, Dee's comment above is quite true. Mount Lavinia beach is full of illegal constructions and some have even fenced off parts of the beach.

How about the hotel being constructed on the Dehiwala Beach. The municipal commissioner should be taken to task as it is clearly a bribed project.

There would never be an issue with illegal constructions if these are stopped at the initial point. Implementation of the law in this country is the main problem, be it traffic or in most other instances!
