‘SAITM Virodi Jana Pawra’ today warned it would carry out a countrywide strike with the participation of schoolteachers, principals, deans of the medical faculties and nurses associations on September 21.

It said the health and education sectors would be disrupted because the employees would be on sick leave on September 21 urging the government to abolish SAITM.

Ceylon Teachers' Services Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe told a news conference held in Colombo that the ‘SAITM Virodi Jana Pawra’ had refused to accept the recently issued presidential committee report because it had not given an acceptable solution on this controversy. Teachers are expected to follow good moral and ethical values. Now they are agreeing to lie to save a day's wage. The problem with this country is that we are too shy even to strictly uphold the law. In a situation like this the Government can insist on a Medical Certificate from a Government Hospital for paid sick leave. They can even go further and charge the leadership for instigating their members to obtain leave under false pretenses. It is time that we put a stop to this nonsense once and for all.

Well, leave schools out because they are kids. And, we do not want a repetition of 88/89. Instead, get the support of transport, banks, ports etc., for the protests.

The doctors may have a point regarding their welfare. However, taking national policy decisions and inconveniencing public is not what they should be doing!

    Nimal Monday, 18 September 2017 04:32 PM

No need to fall sick. it is common knowledge that you are a sick lot.

Time to understand that there isn't much support for the anti-saitm clown circus. Only a few money grubbing doctors and some jvp-brainwashed fellows with inferiority complexes. Hope they will all be fired.

GMOA wants to stop the private medical education for personal gain. Public must treat them with a bit of public medicine that is likely to cure their mental status

    ED Tuesday, 19 September 2017 04:41 AM

IF THE HEALTH AND EDUCATION SECTOR GO ON SICK LEAVE ON THE VERY SAME OF THE STRIKE, THEN THERE SHOULD BE DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKEN BY THE EDUCATION AND HEALTH MINISTRIES. A) - SHOULD TRANSFER THE COLOMBO TEACHER TO RURAL AREAB) - THE HEALTH SECTOR THE SAME.C) - NO SALARY INCREASE FOR BOTH FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARSD) - NO PAY ON ALL SICK LEAVE DAYS

    aruna Tuesday, 19 September 2017 09:13 AM

JVP never can deceive people in this country. They say they are opposed to private medical service and education. Everybody know that private medical service and education stated in Sri lanka about 15 years back and now well established. They never fought for all private health care and education as a matter of policy and only for SAITAM. There are large number of private health care and education Institution in the country. This implies that they always act their political gain and narrow agenda. Purpose is to get votes of doctors and students.People of this country must condemn their motives.

    Sambo Tuesday, 19 September 2017 01:57 PM

What a nice country and government servants we have. They hold students and patients ransom to gain their ends meet. OMG!
