According to the 2021 policy decision, the number of students in a grade-one classroom should not exceed 35, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

However, he said the number of students in such a classroom could accommodate up to 37 and added that the ministry had received several complaints that this policy had not been implemented in certain schools mainly because of political influence.

“Ministerial decisions at national level have to be implemented and there is no way that they can be changed,” the minister said during the opening ceremony of a primary school in Kuliyapitiya. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
