There is an alleged move by the government to get all news websites registered and construct a database of all Facebook account holders which is going to be a violation of the right which people have to express themselves, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said today.
Making a special statement to media, Mr. Premadasa said his party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has received reliable information that the government is trying to suppress the media by getting all news websites to be registered with the media ministry and set up a date base of all Facebook account holders. "Such acts are a violation of the right people has to express themselves," Mr. Premadasa said.
"One has to tolerate those who criticise you over social media as anyone in this country has the right to expression. I was one of the few who were severely attacked over social media lately. I stand for the freedom of those who express themselves through social media despite the repeated assassination of my character. My party will fight against the suppression of the right to expression," he added.(Yohan Perera)
