The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today welcomed the Cabinet decision to absorb 982 SAITM students to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), after their discussion on Friday with Higher Education Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

GMOA Secretary Haritha Aluthge told Daily Mirror that the Gazette notice on abolishing SAITM should also be delivered, parallel to this decision.

He expressed his gratitude to the Minister for his decision to absorb only the students, without absorbing the SAITM Institute and said there was no requirement for a new KDU Act as some amendments to the present Act would enable the process.

Dr. Aluthge said though the GMOA expects to end the SAITM issue, it would not accept any solution that would undermine the University. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

SAITM students were admitted with govt. UGC approval. Those who completed MBBS course were to receive internship by a legal court verdict which found Carlo violating Medical Ordinance and rebelling against the law and order of the land. Now govt. has confirmed transfer of all SAITM students legally for the third time to KDU. Finish.

When did GMOA become the governing body of Sri Lanka? I thought these guy became doctors benefiting from the government's free education facility. They should shut up and take care of patients.

Finally some positive news from GMOA. Hope IUSF also will agree to this to end this long running painful issue. Said that, I still believe that private medical education is a must like in other streams for number of reasons. Mostly to have a competition to improve the standards further.

    Tharanga Wednesday, 16 May 2018 08:26 AM

There are students with 3As and 2As who couldn't enter the medical faculty and leaving abroad for studies while students in outstation with lower results get opportunity to enter the University. Government should come up with a permanent solution to retain students with good results in the country and stop the outflow of money to foreign countries. Majority of the people are with Govermnent on this matter and should not listen to the selfish thugs who are trying to prevent this.

    Patient Wednesday, 16 May 2018 08:29 AM

So, you fellows welcome Government decisions also !!!!

    Wednesday, 16 May 2018 12:21 PM

    Welcome to Ur life.

    Wije Wednesday, 16 May 2018 08:57 AM

This is how GMOA plays double games. Shameless

    Prasath Wednesday, 16 May 2018 03:24 PM

GMOA is a selfish/unreliable lot, trying to protect there current and future demand at the expense of patients and tax payers, if the university students had to pay fees for there education then strikes will be some things that will rarely happen. They will be more interested in finishing there degrees.
