The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) launched a 24-hour-token strike at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital this morning against the British doctor who was performing heart surgeries at the hospital.

The temporary ban imposed on the British surgeon preventing him from conducting surgeries, was lifted last week on a recommendation made by the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) when the GMOA claimed that the British doctor did not have a licence to practice in the United Kingdom (UK) as it needed to be renewed from time to time.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told Daily Mirror that the Director General of Health Services had ordered the hospital director to lift the temporary ban without a valid ground and without conducting an inquiry despite he had guaranteed to do so.

“When we inquired about the qualifications of this doctor, we found out that he only has the registration of General Medical Council (GMC) in UK and not practising rights. He was deprived of practising rights in UK in 2015 due to some reason and he had concealed it while he was producing his documents to the SLMC,” he said. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Registered doctors of GMC will have to renew their practicing rights from time to time. In order for them to renew their practicing rights they must be employed in a hospital or some sort of a medical clinic in the UK. Not having practicing rights doesn't mean he is not a doctor nor he is incapable of performing his task.

The GMOA physicians know that the English doctor has a much higher qualification than any doctor at a Sri Lankan university can ever achieve.

Greedy srilankan doctors protest because of money loosing which they get from P.P. . This particular English Doctor perform these operations free of charge .

    Bandula Friday, 27 April 2018 06:47 PM

Main reason for these objections is because the British Doctor is not charging patients for consultancy. These blood sucking doctors educated at people's expense want to make money and not treating people.

Without endangering poor patients' lives by striking at places like government hospitals, why don't you strike private practice.

Heart operation is a very serious matter. If GMOA says that this Dr's practicing rights have not been re validated in England and he had concealed reasons for it, that needs to be investigated before allowing him to practice. It is not only a question of that he is medically qualified or not. It is a question of his right to practice.
