Foreign agency to redevelop Bogambara prison site

The Cabinet yesterday approved a proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to assign an international agency to redevelop the Bogambara Prison site as a tourist attraction while preserving its historical value.

It was reported that the selected agency which would redevelop the site would be a reputed agency with experience in carrying out such projects.

“The Prime Minister proposed that the five-hectare block of land in the heart of the Kandy City be redeveloped. It fell vacant after the Bogambara Prisons complex was shifted to Pallekele,” the Cabinet proposal said.

The prison complex was a waste of space while in operation, hope they don't waste this valuable land by trying to preserve existing buildings. Very few tourist will be interested in a prison nobody outside SL has heard of. Make is a mixed development with recreational, parks, shopping, officers etc. Kandy needs development badly.

Make it as an extension to the Kandy General Hospital. Part of it could be paying wards, where the Government can make an income. The best project would be to serve the health sector.
